This has already been termed the "Hell-ary" Term "(as opposed to Hilary). We have our exams starting 19th finishing 5 days later and then I am finally off to India to be with my family !!!
The last few weeks have been good and bad...Bad because assignments have killed us outright (the marks were also not encouraging), good because we have had a couple of interviews and one hell of an EXHILARATING day today for our Entrepreneurship Project presentation.
OK, I will tell you why...One of the major features of the Oxford MBA , as I have mentioned before , is the Entrepreneurship Project, where teams of 5 people essentally write a business plan for a business they WANT to establish (a start up). Wait for the good part. Not only is this assessed, each team then has to present its plan to a panel of Venture Capitalists...The people who formed the panel this year were as follows1) Marcos Battisti, Senior Investment Manager, Intel Capital.2) Martin Chilcott, CEO, Place Group Ltd.3) Jon Conibear, Chairman, Medic to Medic ( subsidiary of Informa PLC)4) Graham Clempson, European managing Partner, MidOcean Partners.5) David Cottam, Partner, Park Square Capital.6) Martin Gibson,Partner, Atlas Venture7) Chris Jones, Ex CEO, J walter Thompson.8) Stephen Chambers , Head MBA Program at Said Business School.9) Stewart Niblock, Head of New Projects at easyGroup Inc.10) Charles MacKinnon, Managing Director, Thurleigh Investment Managers11) Jon Moynihan OBE, Executive Chairment , PA Consulting Group12) Jeremy Long, CEO (Europe), MTR Corporation.
and a number of other stars of industry.
Now our team (incidentally with only 3 people, which was a massive disadvantage from the start) went into the presentations armed with 2 sets of presentations. One which we gave and the other which held support slides with data on every aspect of our operations and financials (Can't reveal the idea here...You understand how it is!!!) .Some of the comments that we got from some of the guys listed above are as follows
" Fabulous Job. You guys have really gone in depth on Costs and Financials.."

" Excellent Plan..You should think of doing this on a national scale instead of starting in one city."

" I am sure if we sat here and asked you guys questions for another hour, you would have backup slides to answer every one of them. Good Job"

" Fabulous idea...If you clubbed it with "* Another Idea*" I think you have a winner"

"It is obvious that you guys have put in a lot of work on this...."

For the record, we asked for 2.32 Million Pounds Sterling of investment!!!

It is a great feeling to be told by leaders of such stature that you have done an excellent job !! It lifts your spirits up massively!!..Sumit and Shubradeep, you guys rock bigtime!!!!

Bring on the exams...We are ready for them!!!

Getting down to work!!!!

Getting down to serious work....With 3 weeks to go for exams I do think it is high time we started cramming...:-)!!The past 2 weeks were good, nothing really noteworthy, unless you consider the Cambridge Trip (Oxbridge Job Fair held at the Judge Business School, Cambridge) , Templeton College and St Hugh's College formal dinners. This week we have the McKinsey presentation, which is really being looked forward to. Being one of the older students in class (essentially being over 30 is roughly over the hill!!!), it is great to get back into organizing student shows and activities, which was something we did last week at Oxford Said. The idea was to celebrate a cultural night to showcase MBA talents that DON'T get displayed at all..We had some excellent numbers by Ean and Reba Hernandez, erstwhile members of a professional band, Bollywood group dances, belly dancing, guitar recitals and some mindblowing salsa numbers....I am glad to say that families pitched in too..special thanks to Harpal's daughter Gulnaz for the lovely violin recital she and her teacher put on for us...as well as Shinjini Thakur's rendition of "Dum Maro Dum". We did have a harrowing time setting up everything to work as smoothly as possible but guys (Bobby, Anubhav, Parijat, Dheerin and gang..), you are amazing ..If you are this good in a post grad setting , I can only imagine how good you guys must have been when you were undergrads!!!

Attached are a few links of photoos and videos set up by Ashish Tewari...Enjoy!! Forgot to mention the afterdinner party at ESCAPE, a nightclub here....DJ Dheerin, you rock bigtime!!!

Michelmas Term:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wXjv9Liv4II

Hilary Cultural Show

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h6_UQm40YWs

In other news this week, we have roughly 4 weeks to go before we hit exams again and it seems to be time to open up those books and dive into Debt/Equity and Activity Based Costing..Highlight of this week would be the Oxford and Cambridge MBA Job Recruitment Fair held at the Judge Business School,Cambridge where we have a number of companies and MBAs from both schools trying to woo and be wooed in turn!!

As regards our Entrpreneurship project, we (Sumit /Shubradeep/ me) need as much help from you guys as we can get..In case you or any of your friends have had a lovely baby enter your lives in the recent past, we would like you to write in to me (mjatheendran@yahoo.com) and tell me at length about your experiences during pregnancy/delivery, what are the factors you think would have eased your time through the pregnancy, what is the one thing you wished you could do to make this a less troublesome time in terms of doctor's visits, scanning, actual delivery and dealing with hospitals, what are the activities with which you wish you had help in both prenatal and postnatal terms. Please do drop in a line or bullet points if you can because it will really help me and my guys structure our project properly..
Careers presentations have included in the recent past, Citigroup, RolandBerger Strategy Consultants, Booz Allen Hamilton and Bain..Excellent presentations and I am sure that applications have started flowing in.

And oh yes, I totally forgot about the snow that hit Oxford this week...It was enjoyable seeing serious MBA grads reduced to the level of howling kids when hit by snowballs...........
Before I sign off, happy Valentine's day to all of you.. As for me, I am missing my wife and daughter back home and counting days till April when I will take a short break to go back home....

Could not resist uploading this photo..Ignore Hiro trying to act crazy in the background!!!!!

3 weeks up in Hilary....

An eventful 2 weeks...First, a controversy surrounding electives necessary for the Trinity Term and second, RESULTS of Michelmas!!! To give you a bit of a background, SBS MBAs are supposed to choose 6 electives in the next term from an assortment of subjects including finance, social electives, marketing, retailing etc. Now Finance electives, being hot favourites for any self respecting MBA, are much sought after ( nope, sadly, no fisticuffs this time round!!!) and therefore have a condition of class size (being 100) imposed on them!! Now to put this in perspective , you have roughly 215 MBAs and approximately 70 MFEs trying to get the electives they want by BIDDING for the same [now each MBA has 120 points which have to be spread across 6 subjects based on what think YOU should bid, given 2 major considerations 1) your desire for an elective 2) members in class with the same $#%# desire and therefore bidding higher than you!!! You could choose to do this in the eenie, meenie, miny, moe way (arbit choices) or actually applying auction theory (too painful to discuss here!!!)]. Well anyway, to cut a long story short, Corporate Valuation had a number of pissed off oversubscribed students !!!Not because of the fact that they bid less than their classmates, BUT because of the fact that MFEs who have 90 points to play around with allotted 1 point each to courses that were open only to them (and so were sure to get it because of a small class size) and bidding roughly upwards of 40 to 45 points for those subjects they shared with MBAs.Essentially what that translates to is that any MFE who wanted to do a particular course definitely got the course (assuming they bid high) while many of the MBA's got left out...All in all there were interesting reactions around school addressing this topic. The Final Decision : Those who did not get Corp Valuation and Private Equity, sorry, you should have bid higher!!!!
Side note here: I did get all my electives..Basically my bidding went as follows..Corporate Valuation (35), Arbitrage Opportunities and Hedge Funds (28) , Capital Raising Techniques (25), Restructuring and Implementation(25) , Financial Risk Management (5) and Taxation,Finance and Business Strategy(2)....Finance heavy!!! So be it...
Second top news this week was that we finally got to see the results of our exams last terms and as expected I did pass comfortably in all subjects!! Lotsa cases of Arbit marking and me thinks I did deserve better in some papers but oh well, no time to dwell on a lost cause..Better to pull up your socks for Hilary term!!!Now trying to apply to a variety of companies apart from getting lost on the current set of assignments!!!
And oh yes, Financial Times ranking for the top MBA schools are out...We advanced one position!!!Could do better than that....Contacted the FT auditors on whether the audit year made any difference to the data supplied and here is the answer....

****************************

Hello, All schools wishing to be a part of the Financial Times MBA rankings send data in each year, i.e. all data is current. All data used in the process is for the most current year. A school is only subject to the audit process on a sample basis as determined each fall. Typically a school's data is subject to the process every three years. I believe this should answer your questions below. The audit process does not affect the standings in the rankings. The ranking is based on the merits of the school's data.

Regards,

****************************
Oh well....

Round II begins.....

After close to a month, it is finally time to get back to the (oh, $%$##@) grind!!! Classes start this week, and as usual, full attendance is expected for a period of at least 3 weeks before people start disappearing!! The break was good , though a tad boring since nothing major happened. Christmas this time was subdued , New Year's even more so..Spent some time up in Ruislip with family and for the most part have been boning up on case studies for upcoming interviews(more an excuse to get together to try and play some table tennis...). Some are downright kooky ("Are there any 2 dogs in the world with the same amount of body hair? ") while some are more scary ( Profitability and Market Entry cases where you are scrambling around to ask "sensible" questions [at the very least]). This term will be packed, with 6 courses, 1 audited course, 1 entrepreneurship project, multiple job interviews (hopefully), case preparation , assignments(17 for us who took the more sensible electives, 27 for those suckers who took a combo of MCS and TIS!!(evil grin here.....)) and err..partying?? You are in the week of the usual moaning about turning up for class at 8:45 in the morning...
Trinity term electives are up for bidding ( you need to bid for taking the courses that you want just because SBS derives some kinda sadistic pleasure in getting its oh-so-smart MBA/MFE/EMBA crowd to outguess each other in snagging the best running electives. Finance subjects are hot favourites!!!) And yes, I bought my tickets for my Motherland visit in April!!! Cheap..Now only if the airline would actually fly after near bankruptcy!!!Groups have been shuffled, Sections as well and we are now going to be blessed with another 3 months of classes with (hopefully) new eccentric characters who will again (hopefully) put up their hands to ask irrelevant questions in class !!!Interesting sidenote: Did I tell you about the betting syndicate run last term where we had bets on the number of questions that a certain member of class would ask in a particular subject in a 3 hr time frame (categories-Relevant, Irrelevant, Witticisms!!!)!

Bring it on!!!!

Hell Week is Done!!!

Yes, you got that right!!!Exams got over at 10:30 AM today and truthfully, I am actually wondering what I am going to do in the next 3 weeks.. Exams were written in full subfusc, which basically means a black suit, bow tie and our traditional "capes"!This week has been pretty shitty with a minimal amount of sleep and I have no doubt I am going to catch up over the next few days. 4 days to go and counting....I had the opportunity to invigilate/supervise the Association of Certified Chartered Accountants examination currently being held in St Hugh's for a couple of days... Interesting to see that the invigilators do have to do a lot of work other than walking around trying to make students taking exams feel ill at ease:-))..This is mostly paperwork that needs to be done apart from ,of course, supervising the candidates ensuring a smooth examination...Funnily enough, it also involves having to check the toilets for "damnable" material!!!!

Sunday, we had the opportunity to have a turkey dinner, (thanks to Hiro for these outstanding whims that strike him from time to time) and so we went at it hammer and tongs. Me , Saheel and Hiro shopped on Saturday for the party essentials , including an 8 Kg frozen turkey that was just one massive ball of ice!!! ..Must mention here that Hiro carried the turkey in a backpack and was so bitter about how his butt was in danger of frostbite!!!!The St Hugh's MBA folks chipped in with lotsa other eatables and Brian Brooks ultimately got the honour of carving the turkey after I sorta messed it up (he kept looking for its breast!!! And I can assure you most of the comments that gave rise to are unprintable!!!)!!! Attached are a few photos....We broke up around 1:30 that morning, not before Brian had finished 2 bottles of wine!!!

The cramfest has now begun and there are now little to no MBAs about on the streets of Oxford!!! My team mates (thanks Anoop & Shelby) took the brunt on that one and we managed a pretty decent submission (or so I'd like to think!!).But the tragedy is that the real work starts now for the "wonderful" exams hardly a week away...So I will be lying low for a while.

One word on the Oxford grading system...For those who are not aware of how this twisted academic world functions, we should get a few facts straight...You NEVER get 100%..Live with it because that is a fact of life!! To give you a little bit of background, for the past 2 years, Oxford invites some of the most successfull entrepreneurs in Silicon Valley to come and spend a day with the students at Said. This can take the form of Master Classes ( sessions held by them) or Garage sessions (where the students collectively provide ideas on which these guys can then go and act). This year we had Chris Sacca (Head of Special Initiatives, Google) who is in charge of Picasa, Orkut, Google Earth, Google Trends and WiFi, Reid Hoffman ( Founder , LinkedIn), Matt Cohler (VP Strategy, FaceBook), Allen Morgan (MD, Mayfield Venture Capital), Julie Hanna Farris (Founder, Scalix), Mike Malone (Former Editor, Forbes ASAP and columnist for Silicon Insider) and others. Classes were cleared for half a day to enable us to attend these sessions. I opted for a masterclass presentation by Chris Sacca (extremely entertaining)[ He obviously hates MBAs(we talk too much, we need to make everything complex, we think small and not big..and so on..)...As he very succintly put it " In Google, if you want to be really helpful, just get out of the Geeks' way" or" In Google , we are never more that 150 mtrs away from food!!!"] and a Garage Session run by Synectics for Google. The garage session basically provided a lot of insights from about 20 of us and Chris refers to it in his blog entry.. Lots of insights were shared and it is good to hear privileged information straight from the horses mouth, so to speak. We ended with a panel discussion.
In other news this week, we have finally given up sleeping!!! Hallelujah...Its just that there are now extremely fascinating things like assignments to be submitted and enthralling/thrilling course books to study for the oh-so-wonderful exams coming up in 3 weeks time..Oh yes, please pile it on!!We are now suckers for punishment....

"Please Sir, Can I have some more???"

Cheers till next week or rather, till something momentous takes place!!!!

Entrepreneurs Incorporated. !!

Funny how I start all my posts with "yet another week gone by...".Ok so here goes..Yet another week goes by and there is nothing but more pressure now!!!Highlights of the week were the class photograph taken on Monday and a visit to the James Martin Institute of Science and Civilization (they do some cutting edge work and research on combined aspects of science and sociology-nanotech, healthcare and climate change...etc.) and some of us will probably try and see if we can work with them for some of our projects next year.In Hilary term (Jan - Apr) we are also supposed to start our Entrepreneurial project, which basically involves students in groups of 5 working on creating an entire business plan for some of our entrepreneurial ideas, all of which can range from things as varied as starting a Formula 1 racing team to socially relevant aspects like fighting corruption. We will be pitching our ideas to the student and faculty bodies next week and your truly will also be pitching. I will probably put up my presentation here once I have pitched the same. The final idea is that some of the best plans will be judged by top flight venture capitalists (from JP Morgan, Goldman Sachs...etc.) and angel investors to see whether they would receive funding.Interesting side note: An impossible idea(or so it seemed when it started out) a couple of years back by Said students won the JP Morgan Prize for the best Business Plan and is currently in the process of being funded. There is no wading room in between all the lectures and ever increasing topics to study..But I have to say this, for all those of us who started out with the sciences, engineering and then went into technology, Finance is absolutely fascinating.More so when you start applying it practically to things like currency hedging, volatility of markets and risk management....
In other news this week, went to watch the hilariously disgusting movie BORAT!!! That guy is absolutely crazy, having single handedly managed to offend about half a dozen communities in a very crude manner...From a starving student's point of view, absolute value for money at 6 pounds a ticket!!:-). Also had been to a conversation between George Soros, international financier and philanthropist and Timothy Garton Ash , "The Guardian" columnist held at the University Church here. It was great hearing Soros, the man who "broke the Bank of England" in 1992 and who is today one of the world's richest men, discuss the war on terror.

Finally , presenting the MBA Class of 2007 and a sample of what class actually looks like.......Forgive Anuj conducting stretching exercises in class......

Another exhausting week just went by and we are that much closer to exams and Christmas.. First, a word about the weather. It is bloody freezing...and its not even winter yet...There is this thin crust of ice that forms on the cars early morning and it is always enjoyable to see some people getting out wooden slates and scrubbing it off, cursing to themselves...

It has been a good week, Capital Asset Pricing Model, Regression Analysis and Financial Ratios notwithstanding..Our cases are coming along quite well and there is that contented feeling in the air when you actually have tried to stop looking for a distinction and hope to "just pass" all your exams..Life continues to be as busy as ever.Just got our Microeconomics Industry report topic that we need to submit by the end of the month. Topic chosen is Easyjet and the european airline industry..To the newbies out there, this is Britain's version of "Air Deccan" ....Enuff said!!! Highlight of this week, as with every week , was Happy Hour over at Said Business School (the one day in the week when all drinks are priced at 1 pound!!!). Since my last post, I have been informed that it will not be possible to audit the Technology and Innovation Strategy course (its not me..the profs have weird issues) so have sent in an application to audit the Marketing,Culture and Society course..A bit of light reading, what?

Oh yes, a few of us got together outside the MCR (the graduates common room) where they have a grill and cooked us some steak and fries...Not bad at all!!! Hope to do this with a larger crowd and more beers someday!!! In the photos: Saheel, Chris, Brian, Hirotake and Ven. Tomorrow is class photograph day so am sure there are going to more photoos and gaffes that I will have for you next week.....

Toodle oo and pip pip!!!!!

Elective Choices and Case results!!!

It has been a trying week (so what's new??)..We are now required to take 2 electives next term from 5 subjects in addition to 4 core courses...All the analytical guys (including moi) are going in for Finance II and Macroeconomics. I am also requesting an outside option to audit (basically sit in on the classes for ) Strategy and Technology Innovation. Need to see how that goes. Of course you still need to pass Term I.

We did get results of the our first 2 case submissions back this week .Strategy was okayish (60%) while Organizational Behaviour case was better (70%) . Have 3 more case submissions occuring in this week so the nightmares continue...nothing else that really requires a mention..It has been really quiet since the holiday season is now setting in (starting with Halloween today..) Of course life is also becoming more painful since exams are now only 5 weeks away....Struggling to find some time...

Got some photographs of my daughter Dhriti this week from back home...Enjoy!!!.....Auf Wiedersehn until next time...

Diwali...An excuse for getting plastered!!!!

Come Monday morning this week, it was pretty evident that the program is taking its toll..Zombies are the order of the day !!! There are now 2 categories of people in the business school...those who are desperately trying to catch up after initial weeks of partying !!!Kudos to them...The second category is of those guys who have GIVEN up trying to catch up!!!The number of cases to be submitted is steadily rising ..We did get the results of our first case on strategy and it was not bad for a first ditch effort!!!Lotsa encouragement, minimum marks!!!Its the story of my life!!!The week opened with a trip to Deutsche Bank in London to meet ex MBAs.and then its work all the way......
In other news last week, we had the Diwali Bop (Party) at St Anthony's college, filled with DESIS in traditional outfits (some of them were pretty luscious, to say the least!!! And I am NOT talking about the guys here....)..Sufficient to say we were plastered in a few hours that it took us to deplete the drinks from the bar....A glance at the photos provides evidence....Among the enthusiastic dancers, Ashish Tewari , Sumit Thakur, Somesh deserve special credit...and yes that is a cigar Saheel is smoking in there.....I did try it out too...with expectedly disastrous results.
Did some one say I do not know to Bhangra...????

Price takers and perfect competition!!!!

As I write this at 1:30 AM , which is roughly a normal hour as far as we are now concerned, grappling with the notion of average and marginal economic costs, wonder who the hell said that it was a pretty life? You now know what it means to be a "zombie" in class....Unless of course you are cold called by the prof doing cases, at which point you are going to wake up with "D-uh"!!! Also started my italian classes today and yes" come si scrive il tuo nome???" which is roughly the only sentence we have sorta picked up!!! A lot has happened over the past 3 weeks. Inductions to the Business School as well as individual college was a colourful experience. Each of the class of 216 MBAs had to go up on stage in a short videographed presentation to give an account of our sins and experiences in our lives to date. Classes have started and help, it is too much!!! Of course we do manage to hit the bar quite often as you can see (Dudes, we at St Hugh's have our own labelled wine..beat that!!!!)....

We did manage to successfully upload our first assignment in strategy successfully today...thanks to my committed group..(Anoop, Russel, Shelby, Yoshiki and Jacquelline)......and yes , before i sign off, some photos of my matriculation ceremony are here..... One AWESOME Experience...!!!! Thanks to Hiro, Chris North and Saheel for providing the photos...

<img style="FLOAT: type='text'>Lotsa changes in 2 years.....

So much has happened in the last 2 years...Left Mphasis, joined Infosys as a Project Manager in their Finacle division....Sometimes me thinks being a developer is the best job...!!!!Have spent the last 2 years delivering projects for Finacle....Also , have been blessed with the most beautiful baby girl in the world....Me and Priya have named her Dhriti....Some photos of the naming ceremony are attached.......In other news, have been accepted at Oxford University for my MBA...Will be joining in September...Quite recently, got to see the profiles of my classmates who will be with me...Interesting, because we are a varied bunch and intimidating, because I will have to be on my toes to keep up with everyone....Let us see how that turns out......Newsflash:...Pramod is getting hitched....Talks are underway to fix a date...All we can say is , "Don't be naughty"......<div with Mphasis, a software services firm in Bangalore ...Married, lovely wife,no kids (not yet..)...Let us see how this goes .....Am currently in Mumbai, I city I dislike thoroughly ....It is just way to dirty and everyone is a crook here.......The other day I had been to the doc, who in all his infinite wisdom has the funny habit of doling out multicoloured pills from him private cache instead of actually giving you a prescription!!!and yes, he charged me for both the visits I made to him!!!!Something you will never come across in Bangalore.......Well Mumbai sucks!!!Wondewr why anyone wants to live in this dump of a city whihc has garbage strewn all over the road, filled with underworld goons and apathetic cops and of course knee deep water during the monsoons......Amen<div
